When you live in a swing state, campaign season can be overwhelming to say the least. With a little more than two months to go until the election, voters in Colorado are being inundated with competing and often contradictory political messages. It sometimes seems that it would be easier to tune out altogether than to try to understand the real facts on key campaign issues.
The information overload that accompanies every election cycle illustrates just how pressing the need is for trusted, neutral sources of data – and this is precisely why I am so pleased to have joined the Colorado Health Institute as their new director of legislative services.
As a non-partisan organization, CHI provides objective analysis that policymakers on both sides of the aisle can use to make smart health care policy decisions. CHI fills a critical role for those who want reliable data and insights without the spin.
In my new role, I will be working with legislators and other stakeholders to ensure that they have the information they need to make evidence-based decisions. Here is a preview of what CHI’s legislative services program will offer over the coming months:
- Hot Issues in Health Care Legislative Conference: This biennial event brings together lawmakers from across the political spectrum to learn about and discuss the state’s critical health care issues and the implications for the coming session. This year’s conference will also feature a “Health Care Boot Camp” that aims to teach newly elected lawmakers the basics of Colorado’s health care system.
- Legislative Roundtables: As in years past, CHI will host legislative roundtables throughout the session to focus on the state’s most pressing health care issues– and as always, CHI will present analysis based on facts and data, ensuring that the discussion remains above the political fray.
- Ongoing Information Resource: Whether it’s providing essential data to inform a new policy or providing analysis to help lawmakers make better-informed decisions, our team works to fill lawmakers’ health care information needs throughout the year.
I look forward to working with the CHI team as we continue to bring valuable data and insights to the health care conversation. Feel free to introduce yourself and let me know if you have any suggestions for making our legislative services program even more effective in the coming session.
