Recruitment and Retention of Colorado’s Primary Care Workforce: Rural/Urban Differences

Prepared for the 2009 Colorado Health Professions Workforce summit, this report provides an overview of CHI's study of workforce diversity, educational pipelines, aging workers, career ladders and scopes of practice, and collaborative models of care for three primary care health professionals – physicians, nurses and oral health providers.

Some key findings include: Selective admissions, institutional commitment, debt forgiveness and other efforts are effective in promoting rural practice and primary care specialties and robust career ladder opportunities are associated with increased productivity and satisfaction among nurses.
