A Fresh Look at Health Care Cost Drivers
CHI provided this fact sheet/presentation to policymakers and other health care leaders who attended the 2012 Hot Issues in Health Care legislative conference.
Health care expenditures in the United States have risen dramatically over the past several decades. The factors driving health care costs are varied and complex, and they can be logistically and politically challenging to address. However, a number of options are being discussed to mitigate the growth of health care costs. These options range from introducing more free market principles into the health care marketplace to implementing more government regulation to rein in costs. Evidence of effectiveness is mixed. While many of these options may reduce the health care cost trajectory, some are likely to limit access to care.
