Not Your Mother’s HMO: Understanding New Health Payment Models

New health payment models are designed to reward high quality and attempt to slow the ever-increasing costs of health care. Unlike some of the managed care models from the 1990s that emphasized cost containment, new models are making investments in primary care and emphasizing provider accountability for both cost and quality. Evidence suggests limited but promising results from care coordination, bundled and global payment models. Colorado’s public and private sectors are leading efforts to test these models and transform health care in Colorado.
