Obesity Treatment: A New Strategy to Address a Growing Problem
At a time when the thoughts of many Coloradans turn to weight loss and diets, the Colorado Health Institute (CHI) is releasing an issue brief examining a provision of the Affordable Care Act that requires insurance companies to cover - for the first time - the costs of screening and treatment for obese patients.
Of the roughly 610,000 obese Coloradans with health insurance, many may now be eligible to sign up for treatment programs without cost-sharing or co-pays. Yet it’s a good bet that many are unaware of the change.
The brief draws from key informant interviews to examine the pros and cons of the change, as well as the challenges to its successful implementation.
