Extreme Makeover: Homepage Edition

The first time I ever tried gelato – the creamy frozen Italian dessert – I wondered how I could ever go back to regular ice cream.

I feel the same way about the Colorado Health Institute’s new home page.

Just two years ago, we made over our entire website with the help of Open Media Foundation, a nonprofit Denver-based media and technology organization. We loved the look of the new site, and so did our regular readers. But we’ve learned a lot in the past two years, and we applied those lessons to the new home page you’re seeing for the first time today.

The best part about gelato is mashing up two or more flavors in one cup. You’ll see that idea at work at the top of our new page. It features not just new reports, but all the various flavors of CHI’s work, including blogs, graphics, presentations, and podcasts.

The website will allow us to our new work as well as older research that is relevant again. Our goal is to serve up the best and most current research from CHI’s body of work every day.

CHI’s Creative Director, Brian Clark, designed the new page. Here’s how he describes the new features:

Homepage Hero

CHI will not be teaming up with Iron Man and the rest of the Avengers to save the world, but our new homepage “hero image” might just save you a little time as you navigate the world of health policy. The splashy image across the top of our homepage is designed to help you quickly figure out what we’re highlighting as the news of the day.

Libraries

We’ve always encouraged you to use our graphics, presentations and data, and now we’re making it even easier. Want to use one of our graphics in your presentation? Need county-level health rankings? Couldn’t make it to see a CHI presentation in person? Search, download and feel free use our products as needed. Our new library section organizes our content and puts it right at your fingertips. And we promise we’ll never shush you or charge late fees.

The Edge

Another feature designed to help you quickly navigate our site is our homepage side rail. In addition to quick links to our Services, Expertise and Libraries pages, you’ll find information about our blog, newsletter, featured experts and major offerings like the Regional Health Connectors and Colorado Health Access Survey.

Lights, Camera…

We wanted to let the world know who we are and what we do, so we asked award-winning videographer Sonya Doctorian to help us tell our story. Find the video on the About Us box on our homepage. Four minutes well spent.

A big thanks again to Open Media Foundation for making Brian’s design a reality. And thank you for stopping by our website and staying up to date on important developments in Colorado health policy.
